A New Social Contract for the Age of Intelligent Machines

As humanity embarks on a transformative era shaped by artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, we stand at a profound crossroads. For the first time in history, machines possess the potential to surpass human abilities in cognitive, creative, and physical tasks. This seismic shift offers extraordinary opportunities to liberate humanity from menial labor, yet it also threatens to devalue human work, fracture societal cohesion, and undermine our dignity. The time has come to chart a purposeful and principled course forward — a new social contract for living harmoniously with intelligent machines in a way that enriches human potential, fosters equality, and preserves the intrinsic value of human life. This manifesto demands the responsible and deliberate use of AI to serve humanity as a whole — not just the few — and envisions a future in which human creativity, purpose, and flourishing are paramount.

I. Guiding Principles for an AI-Driven Society

  1. Human Dignity is Non-Negotiable
The inherent worth of every human being must be upheld in a world increasingly shaped by intelligent machines. AI should amplify human potential, not displace it.
  2. AI as a Public Good
Artificial intelligence is not merely a commodity; it is a resource built on collective human knowledge. Its benefits must be shared equitably, not concentrated in the hands of a few corporations or nations.
  3. Work as a Source of Purpose, Not Just Productivity
Human labor is more than an economic function — it is a vehicle for meaning, creativity, and connection. AI must liberate humans from drudgery while fostering meaningful, purpose-driven work.
  4. Accountability Over Autonomy
AI systems and robotics must remain under transparent human oversight, and decision-making power must rest firmly with people.
  5. Sustainability for Humanity and the Planet
The deployment of AI must prioritize ecological integrity, ensuring that innovation serves the long-term well-being of our planet and future generations.
  6. Ethics by Design
AI systems must be developed with fairness, bias elimination, and inclusivity at their core. Ethical principles cannot be an afterthought — they must guide every stage of AI design.

II. A Vision for the Future

  1. Redefining Work in the Age of AI
We believe in transitioning from a society that ties income and societal worth to labor, to one that values diverse contributions. AI must replace “bullshit jobs” — tasks that lack meaning and personal growth — while creating opportunities for individuals to engage in care, creativity, innovation, and collaboration, which only humans can fully realize.
  2. Universal Economic Security
The decoupling of income from labor is both a necessity and an opportunity. Mechanisms like Universal Basic Income (UBI), funded through fair taxation of AI-driven corporate profits, should provide all citizens with a safety net that secures fundamental human needs. This ensures no one is disenfranchised by automation.
  3. Education as Lifelong Empowerment
As AI reshapes industries, education must become a lifelong, participatory process. It should equip individuals not only with technical skills but also with the moral imagination, adaptability, and interdisciplinary thinking necessary to work alongside intelligent systems.
  4. Democratic Oversight of AI and Robotics
AI systems must operate transparently and be accountable to democratic institutions. Governments, civil society, and diverse communities must have a voice in shaping how and where AI is deployed. Citizens must be empowered to participate in decisions about the future of work, privacy, and societal structure.
  5. Purpose-Driven Innovation
AI development should focus on solving humanity’s greatest challenges — climate change, poverty, health, and education — while steering away from extractive models that erode trust, privacy, and well-being.

III. Rules for Responsible Deployment of AI

  1. The Right to Meaningful Work
Every individual deserves access to meaningful work opportunities. AI systems must be deployed in ways that expand such opportunities, not diminish them.
  2. AI Revenue Sharing
AI-driven profits must contribute to the public good. Companies benefiting disproportionately from automation must reinvest into society via taxation, funding for social programs, and innovation grants.
  3. Prohibition of Autonomy in Critical Functions
AI and robotics must never be granted full autonomy in matters of life and death, governance, or areas requiring emotional intelligence. Critical decisions must remain human-led.
  4. AI and Environmental Stewardship
AI deployment must prioritize ecological responsibility. Energy-intensive AI systems must adhere to strict sustainability goals, and innovation must focus on solutions for planetary resilience.
  5. Ethical Use Across Borders
The international community must adopt binding agreements to prevent the misuse of AI — whether in warfare, mass surveillance, or the violation of human rights.
  6. Worker Transition Support
Individuals displaced by AI systems must be supported with robust retraining programs, guaranteed income during transitions, and pathways to new opportunities. No one should be left behind.

IV. Call to Action

The challenge before us is both urgent and universal; it requires bold thinking, collective action, and a commitment to shared values. We call on:

  • Policymakers to enact frameworks that protect society from the risks of unrestrained AI development while harnessing its transformative potential for good.
  • Corporations to embrace responsibility, ensuring that their use of AI aligns with societal well-being and long-term sustainability, not short-term profit.
  • Educators and Innovators to foster a culture of learning and creativity that prepares humanity for new ways of working, thinking, and thriving.
  • Citizens to demand ethical AI governance and participate in shaping the future of our societies.

V. Our Commitment to Humanity

This manifesto is our pledge to uphold human dignity in an AI-driven world. It is a declaration that machines exist to serve humanity, not the other way around. We have the tools, the ingenuity, and the power to create a future where technology enables freedom, equality, and purpose for all.Humanity’s greatest achievement has never been its tools, but its ability to come together in pursuit of shared goals. Let us rise to this moment with courage, wisdom, and compassion. The future is not written by machines. It is written by us (and machines can help us doing that).
